  11. Welcome to the PsL January 1994 CD. This month's CD contains over 725
  12. programs received by PsL in the last 30 days. In addition, this month
  13. includes all the games from our Windows and DOS Games sections. To
  14. access those files, change to the \GAMES directory and type README.
  15. The following information applies only to the new programs for the
  16. month.

  19. 1. License & Warranty:

  21. Run PSL_NEWS to read the CD-ROM usage license and warranty.

  24. 2. PsL News Files:
  25.  
  26. The files PSL_NEWS.0 thru *.9 are the text of the current PsL News. These
  27. files are in the PSL_NEWS directory and are read by PSL_NEWS.EXE. They are
  28. also in the file PSL_9311.ZIP in the \DOS\ELEC_PUB directory.

  31. 3. File Format:
  32.  
  33. All programs are in ZIP format. Some very large programs have also been
  34. installed on the CD so that individual users of the CD (as opposed to BBS
  35. users) can more easily try them out without having to go through a long,
  36. disk-space eating installation.

  38. The "preinstalled files" directories do not have FILES.BBS files, as they are
  39. not intended for downloading (because the same files are in ZIP format in
  40. other directories).
  41.  
  42. All of the 725+ new ZIPs have FILE_ID.DIZ files for easier BBS use; however,
  43. due to time constraints in trying to move large sections of PsL's disk-based
  44. library from floppies to the CD on a monthly basis, some of those programs are
  45. in self-extracting archive format rather than in ZIP format and many ZIPs do
  46. not have FILE_ID.DIZ files. There are FILES.BBS files in each directory.

  49. 4. Here is the directory structure of this CD:

  86. Due to their large size, some programs/files have been preinstalled on the
  87. CD-ROM for your convenience and to save your hard disk space. These files
  88. are also available in ZIP format in the appropriate directory.

  98. 5. FILES.BBS files:
  99.  
  100. For BBS use, we have added FILES.BBS files listing the contents of each ZIP
  101. file directory. We have been told a dozen different formats to use, but the
  102. format we used was the one most common to the various formats mentioned:

  108. Each directory has a FILES.BBS file in it. There is also a FILES.BBS file
  109. in the root directory for all the new/updated programs for the month.

  112. 6. The \SCREENS Directory
  113.  
  114. The Screens directory contains screen shots of some programs on this CD.
  115. For information about how to see the screen shots while reading PSL_NEWS,
  116. see TOGETHER.DOC in the SCREENS directory. (TOGETHER is not required for
  117. viewing screens with PSL_WIN.)

  120. 7. Reviews Files
  121.  
  122. In the REVIEWS directory are the reviews of the more than 8000 programs in
  123. PsL's disk-based collection. (These programs are NOT all on this CD.)

  125. The files RVW_??.ZIP in REVIEWS\RVW_ZIP are ZIP files of the Reviews by
  126. category (with ?? being a two-letter category code).

  143. 8. RUNTIMES
  144.  
  145. The RUNTIMES directory contain run-time files required by some other programs.
  146.

  148. 9. Problems
  149.  
  150. All the programs on this CD have been tested and should run. If you have
  151. difficulties, write or call PsL's Tech Support department. Most difficulties
  152. can be cleared up over the phone in a couple of minutes. There is normally no
  153. waiting to talk to a technician.
  154.  
  155. 1. "My machine locks up or reboots when I try to install a program using the
  156.     PSL_NEWS program."
  157.  
  158. You have one of the small percentage of systems with a CD-ROM driver that is
  159. incompatible with PKUNZIP. To get around that problem, we have placed a public
  160. domain unzip program on the CD. To invoke it, you must use the DOS-based
  161. program and run it using the syntax: "PSL_NEWS /U" (without the quotes).
  162.  
  163. The only drawback is that some programs have subdirectory structures stored
  164. in the ZIP files and UNZIP will not recreate the directory structure the way
  165. PKZUNZIP will. To get around that problem, copy BOTH the program ZIP file and
  166. PKUNZIP.EXE from the CD onto your hard disk and then use "PKUNZIP -D [pgm]"
  167. (substitute the program zip file name for "[zip]") to unzip it.

  169. 2. "PKUNZIP tells me to insert another disk when I try to unzip the file from
  170.     the CD."
  171.  
  172. The programmer used a PKZIP flag that he shouldn't have when zipping the
  173. program. To get around this, copy the ZIP file from the CD to your hard disk
  174. and use PKUNZIP to unzip it to the same directory on your hard disk as the ZIP
  175. file.

  179. 10. YOU Make This CD.
  180.  
  181. Your comments and suggestions are appreciated. We are striving to make this
  182. the ideal CD for sysops and vendors, as well as for individual and users. We
  183. will implement every possibly suggestion that will still allow us to produce
  184. the CD in a timely manner.

  201. Now press ESC and the PSL_NEWS.EXE program will run.
  202.     
  203. Once the program is running, you can press F1 for more instructions,
  204. although the use of the program should be pretty obvious and simple.
  205.  
  206. In brief, you select a category, read about programs, and press I to
  207. install one. The installation will leave you at the DOS prompt. At
  208. that point, change to the drive and directory you specified during the
  209. installation.

  211. PsL's installation simply un-ZIPs the files onto your hard disk.
  212. Some programs may require you to perform a further installation.
  213. After the files are put on your hard disk. Look for files like INSTALL 
  214. or files with README in the name or with extensions of .DOC or .TXT.
  215. These files can be read with the VIEW program from the CD. If your CD
  216. is drive D:, for example, type D:\VIEW READ.ME (after you change to
  217. the installed program's drive and directory).
